Rediscovering Balance with Maya Abdominal Therapy

Maya Abdominal Massage

Maya Abdominal Therapy has its roots in the traditional healing practices of the Maya people and was brought to wider attention by Dr. Rosita Arvigo. At its heart, this gentle, hands-on approach supports the body’s natural ability to self-correct. By guiding the organs of the abdomen and pelvis back toward their optimal position, it helps restore the healthy flow of blood, lymph, nerve impulses, and energy.

Many people describe a feeling of spaciousness and relief after a session — as if long-held tension in the belly and pelvis finally lets go. When circulation and energy can move freely, congestion eases, balance returns, and the body is better able to heal.

We’re excited to introduce our  new practitioner Emily - she  specializes in this unique therapy as trained by Dr. Arvigo. Emily brings her session full circle by providing Craniosacral therapy to close.

What a Session Looks Like

Your first visit is typically one hour. We begin with a thoughtful conversation and health intake to understand your history and needs. A gentle physical assessment follows, then your hands-on session.

You’ll be comfortably draped throughout, much as you would be for a professional massage. Because the uterus rests just above the pubic bone, the session often begins low in the abdomen just above the pubic bone  and then expands to include the whole abdominal area, as well as the back, hips, and sacrum. This work not only supports proper uterine alignment but also encourages free flow of circulation and energy throughout the entire pelvic region.

When Maya Abdominal Therapy Should Be Postponed

  • During pregnancy at this time (you can receive other modalities we offer)

  • Modified during  active menstruation:
Best to wait until bleeding has stopped, as treatment can increase flow.

  • Immediately after abdominal or pelvic surgery:
Wait at least 6–8 weeks (or as advised by your physician) until scar tissue is stable.

  • Immediately after a vaginal birth or cesarean section:
Usually wait 4–6 weeks or until cleared by your care provider.

  • Active infection or inflammation:
Such as pelvic inflammatory disease, urinary tract infection, or gastrointestinal infection — wait until it resolves.

  • Presence of IUD (intrauterine device):
Typically avoid direct uterine massage unless cleared by your healthcare provider.

  • Unexplained abdominal or pelvic pain:
Seek medical evaluation first to rule out serious conditions.

  • Abdominal or pelvic malignancy:
Avoid if there is known or suspected cancer in the area.

  • Abdominal aneurysm or severe cardiovascular disease:
Avoid deep abdominal massage without physician approval.

  • Fever or systemic infection:
    Postpone until fully recovered.

Empowering You with Self-Care

One of the most empowering aspects of Maya Abdominal Therapy is that you take part in your own healing. You can be guided through a simple self-massage routine — originally developed by Dr. Arvigo. Practicing this gentle, ten-minute massage each day between sessions helps keep the tissues supple, improves circulation, and often speeds results.

A Holistic Approach

We find combining Maya Abdominal Therapy with acupuncture can be especially powerful. Together, these therapies address both the physical and energetic layers of healing, often leading to more rapid and lasting improvement.

Closing Thought

Caring for the abdomen isn’t just about relieving symptoms — it’s about reconnecting with the center of the body, where so much vitality and life force resides. Whether you’re addressing a specific concern or simply seeking better balance, Maya Abdominal Therapy offers a way to support the body’s natural rhythms and restore harmony from within.
